Why Is Wearing Sunscreen Important and Is it Safe?

…If you are curious on whether or not you need to wear sunblock everyday, I’ll be the first to tell you that you do.

When I was younger, my mother used to hold me down by all fours just to get me to apply sunscreen and I honestly don’t thank her enough for it. Growing up with two parents who loved Lake Havasu (and everything related), it became very clear why it was so important to my mother that I wear sunscreen.  Im a firm believer that there’s is nothing wrong with getting a little bit of sun, vitamin D is important for bone health and known as a natural antioxidant, but seeing the effects that over tanning had on some of my mothers friends made me wonder what my skin will look like a few years down the road. Let’s just say I started bring my own sunscreen to the beach after that.

Did you know the number-one cause of premature aging of the face is ultra violet exposure? By wearing sunscreen you are slowing down the development of wrinkles and leathery skin.

There has been some talk of whether or not sunscreen is safe to use (for both you and the environment around you) for some time now. I even once had a friend who did not believe in applying sunscreen to her children unless absolutely necessary. Her worries were with certain products, like chemical sunscreens, that soak into the skin and absorb into the plasma in your blood. While I agree that chemical sunscreens are a) unnecessary and b) a leading cause to the bleaching of coral reefs, I still respect its close relative, the Mineral sunscreen. What I love about mineral sunscreen is the simple fact that it doesn’t seep in past your skin and it creates a reflective surface only visible to harmful UV rays. Not only does this slow the progression of wrinkles and fine lines but it also protects you from a large number of sun linked diseases such as skin cancer.

Sunscreen is a multipurpose tool that many of us take for granted. The benefits from daily use of sunscreen go on and on like preventing wrinkles and sun spots, or just simply minimizing your changes of developing skin cancer. It’s completely reasonable to feel uncomfortable with chemical sunscreens that can soak into the skin and have no intention on leaving any time soon. In my opinion, you should stop what you’re doing this minute and invest some time in finding a mineral sunscreen trust. It’s never a bad idea to ask for some help when looking for the right sunscreen for you.
